'Positive' next steps agreed at Campaign for Borders Rail AGM

Borders politicians praised the recent Campaign for Borders Rail AGM and said they were "optimistic" of progress on new railway routes.

MSP Rachael Hamilton and MP John Lamont have been campaigning for the extension of the Borders Railway to Hawick, Newcastleton and onto Carlisle.

Borders MSP Rachael Hamilton said: "Better rail links are essential for people to get around, go to work, visit family, see friends and use public transport more often.

"I'm optimistic that the Borders Railway extension is moving forward, although I will continue pushing for a faster timetable for the completion of the feasibility study.

"The extension would have a transformational impact on the local economy and bring more jobs to the Borders."

Borders MP John Lamont said: "Thank you to everyone who attended this AGM for their passion and commitment to improving local rail services.

"The Borders Railway has been a great success but everyone at the AGM was in agreement that more action is needed to link up communities and boost economic growth.

"I will keep campaigning for progress on the extension to Hawick, Newcastleton and onto Carlisle."
